What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a heightened state of focus and suggestibility in which the body and conscious mind are in a naturally relaxed state while the subconscious mind remains very alert and receptive to positive suggestions for change. People often refer to hypnosis as a state where one can concentrate intensely while blocking out distractions.
With hypnosis, we simply deal with how an undesired behavior can be unlearned and how a desired one can be learned to replace it. What we do is simply reprogram your subconscious mind to make it congruent with what you want consciously.
Therapeutic hypnosis is a tool used to bypass the critical analysis of your mind so that the suggestions for change can be accepted and then incorporated into a new “automatic” behavior. Like they do with a computer, we reprogram your subconscious mind and create new positive associations that will help you achieve the goal you haven’t been able to achieve by yourself so far.
What is a clinical hypnotist?
It is commonly believed that hypnotists are similar to other mental health professionals, like psychologists. Hypnosis, however, is a unique modality with with its own scope and preparation. Technically, a hypnotist is a professional specifically trained to support vocational and avocational self-improvement via the use of hypnosis. However, hypnotists can also work beyond their scope by way of referrals from doctors, dentists, and psychologists.
A well-trained hypnotist understands that clients heal themselves. Is more like a coach or a guide that holds a positive and powerful vision for his clients—a vision so contagious that it is projected outward, a vision so persuasive that the client can’t help but be absorbed by it. When these conditions are met, change becomes inevitable, and therapist and client will co-create a beautiful new reality.
What is EFT?
Emotional Freedom Technique is a relatively new discovery and a fast-evolving treatment within the field of Energy Psychology. Often referred to as “Psychological acupressure”, the technique works by releasing blockages within the energy system which are the source of emotional intensity and discomfort. This technique is being accepted more and more in medical and psychiatric circles as well as in the range of psychotherapies and healing disciplines.
An EFT treatment involves the use of fingertips rather than needles to tap on the end points of energy meridians that are situated just beneath the surface of the skin. The treatment is non-invasive and works on the ethos of making change simple and pain free.
Why invest in hypnosis?
Initiating change at the conscious level can be very difficult. The conscious mind makes up only around 10-12% of our total mind power. By contrast, the subconscious mind encompasses the other 88-90%. This vast portion of our mind houses the unconscious story or programming that influences virtually everything we do. If it isn’t congruent with our conscious desires, it is not hard to see which part of the mind will get its way.
Because hypnosis is the art of rewriting unconscious programs, it is very effective at turning the subconscious mind into a powerful “goal machine” that works behind the scenes, 24/7, to create positive, lasting changes in our lives. To get an idea of hypnosis efficacy, see this comparison study published in Psychotherapy Magazine (Volume 7, Number 1, Alfred A Barrios, PhD):
Hypnosis: 93% recovery after 6 sessions
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: 72% recovery after 22 sessions
Psychoanalysis: 38% recovery after 600 sessions
Can anyone be hypnotized?
Yes. Everyone has the ability to be hypnotized. Hypnosis, or trance is a very normal process that we all experience every day, such as before we fall asleep, or when we ‘zone out’ going about our routine tasks. For example, how many times have you got into your car, or public transport and forgotten the journey as you magically arrive at your destination?
Don’t try to be hypnotized, is like trying to fall asleep. Trust the process.
Everyone who is willing to relax and enjoy the benefits of hypnosis can be hypnotized. Anyone who can follow directions can be hypnotized. The most creative and intelligent people are usually the best subjects.
I went to a hypnotist once before and it didn’t work. Does this mean I cannot be hypnotized?
Hypnosis is a natural state that we have access to all day long. When you drive down the road and miss a turn or get lost in a movie or your favorite song, those are all states of hypnosis.
The most common reason for failure to induce trance is lack of rapport and explanation of the state, or a hypnotherapist without proper training who is using incomplete methods. Always check with the background of a new hypnotherapist before committing to a session.
Will I be asleep?
Historically, the word Hypnosis comes from Greek origin meaning a “sleep-like state”. However you will not be asleep, nor will you be unconscious. You will be aware of everything that is happening and that is being said the whole time.
You will be entirely focused on increasing your motivation, your beliefs in what is possible, your confidence and your self-esteem. Although the words “deep sleep” may be used during our sessions, you will hear everything that is being said: this is your clue to the fact that you are in the hypnotic state rather than sleep.
Do some people get "stuck in a trance"?
No. You are only in a state of very deep relaxation and you can leave that state whenever you want to. It is impossible to get “stuck”.
All hypnotic state ends, whether formally ended by the Hypnotherapist or naturally by you.
Will I do things I don't want to or be totally under your control?
Absolutely not. Hypnosis works on the basis of positive suggestions. Whilst you may fall into a dreamlike state, your mind is still in control and will reject any suggestions that you would normally consider inappropriate. You are not in anyone’s power and you cannot be controlled in any way.
The people you see on stage shows are all “willing volunteers” whose eagerness to entertain others is the basis of their apparent programmed behavior. You cannot be made to do anything against your will; no one can be made to do anything or say anything that conflicts with his or her personal and ethical standards or morals.
Will I lose all control of my mind or reveal personal secrets?
No, you won’t say or do anything that you don’t want to. While hypnosis can be used for personal benefit, it cannot cause you to say or do anything against your free will or ethics.
Therapeutic hypnosis is specifically used to improve your health and well-being and is different from stage hypnosis that is used for entertainment purposes only. You will not start clucking like a chicken or break out in a Michael Jackson dance. If you were given suggestions that you don’t morally agree with, you would come out of hypnosis and your mind would mentally block those suggestions. Hypnosis is not a control state, it is an agreeable state for the mind and body to shift its perspective in life.
Will I remember everything afterwards?
Most people do remember either everything or certain parts of the experience, depending on how deep your mind goes. You will find that suggestions which have been given to you in hypnosis will resurface in your conscious, thinking mind after your session and these will be the thoughts that produce positive changes in your behavior or way of thinking and feeling.
Are there any negative side effects?
There are no negative side effects. Most people find the experience to be extremely positive, beneficial and empowering. Hypnosis is considered safe no matter what your condition. I always ensure that you and are in a positive, relaxed and motivated state at the end of each session.
Can hypnosis help me?
Yes. Habits are controlled by the subconscious mind. Since hypnosis accesses the subconscious mind, your behavior can be modified to benefit you by replacing old beliefs or behaviors you no longer need or want with new ones you desire. All behaviors are a learned response. If you learned them, you can unlearn them.
What can hypnosis help me with?
Weight loss, relationship enhancement, self-esteem and self-confidence, positive attitude, motivation, goals and success achievement, fears (flying, public speaking, heights, success or failure, animals, doctors, dentist, etc.), habit control (stop smoking, stop nail biting, etc.), sports and performance enhancement, test taking, stress reduction, pain management, releasing negative emotions (anger, fear, sadness, guilt, etc.), spiritual growth, and the list goes on and on…
Because it works! With hypnosis, you can access the subconscious mind to release and discover core issues causing symptoms of stress, fears, phobias, anxiety, etc. Studies have found that subconscious thoughts and beliefs are eight to nine times more powerful than conscious awareness. Thus when you change the subconscious thought process, you are tapping eight to nine times more power over your life than conscious determination would allow.
Here are powerful reasons to use hypnosis to better your life:
▶ EMOTIONAL BENEFITS: Stress Management, Confidence & Self-Esteem, Eliminate Fears & Phobias
▶ PHYSICAL BENEFITS: Weight Control, Pain Management, Insomnia, Athletic Skills & Performance
▶ MENTAL BENEFITS: Overcome Sabotage, Eliminate Procrastination, Improve Memory, Goal Setting
▶ BEHAVIORAL BENEFITS: Stop Smoking, Habit Control, Self Love, Communication Skills
What is Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)?
NLP is the study of the mind and of language and how their interplay effects on our behavior. To put it simply, it is how through our language (linguistic) we can change (program) how our mind (neuro) works.
“What is it that makes the difference between somebody who is merely competent at any given skill and somebody who excels at the same skill?” Before the development of NLP, we had explanations as to why we act in certain ways. Since NLP, we have the understanding of how we act in those ways. Used by leaders such as Steve Jobs or Bill Gates, NLP enables a competent person to turn their old performance into one of excellence. Described as “software for your brain”, it takes you to the root of understanding behavior and allows you to automatically tap into the experiences you want to have and acquire the behaviors and positive mind-sets we want.
We were never given a manual on how our minds worked, but I like to think of NLP as that manual.
What Is Timeline Therapy?
Behavioral change in an individual takes place at a subconscious level. People don’t change consciously. The Timeline Therapy process allows you to work at the subconscious level and release the effects of past negative experiences and change “inappropriate” programming in minutes rather than days, months or years. It is a revolutionary new approach, which has become so popular because of its ability to create quick, long lasting results. This powerful technique is becoming the method of choice to make fast, effective, long-term changes in behavior.
